About

Roman Shumunov is an award-winning Israeli film director, screenwriter, and editor. With a repertoire spanning various genres, Roman has been actively involved in TV and cinema projects as both a director and writer.

His name gained prominence in 2016 when his documentary «Babylon Dreamers» was selected to inaugurate the International Documentary Film Festival — DOCAVIV, where it also won the first prize. In the same festival, Roman was lauded as the most promising young director.

In 2018, he directed a full-length social drama about young immigrants titled «Here and Now», which garnered the Ophir Award (Israeli Oscar) for Best Music, as well as awards for Best Screenplay and Best Film. In 2020, Roman revisited his passion for documentaries with the critically acclaimed «Back to Chernobyl». This film gained international traction and was distributed to dozens of countries and film festivals worldwide.

His epic and award-winning drama film «Berenshtein — The Last Partisan» was released in 2021, after 4.5 years of production. Based on the true story of Ukrainian Jewish partisan commander Leonid Berenshtein, the film spotlights Berenshtein’s role in locating Hitler’s secret facility, thereby altering the course of WWII. This film has become one of the most successful in its genre in Israeli cinema, dubbed into six languages and screened in cinemas across countries such as the USA, Germany, Japan, England, Australia, and South Korea. It has also won first prizes at numerous global festivals.

In 2022, Roman released «Memory Forest», a four-episode series filmed in Poland that follows a group of teenagers on a journey to Poland’s concentration camps, offering them a visceral lesson on the blood-soaked history of WWII. The series made its mark by winning the first prize for Best Series at the BANFF Media Festival, Rockie Awards 2023.

That same year, he worked on «Generation 1.5», a three-episode TV series that quickly became one of the most talked-about series of the year.
Additionally, he directed and co-produced «Munich 72», a new three-episode TV series about the massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, in partnership with Global Screen, a German entertainment company, and Israeli broadcaster Ch8.
